The Banjo-Kazooie series features a dynamic progression system where new techniques are essential for overcoming challenges and accessing hidden areas. Abilities are taught by Bottles, a knowledgeable mole, or his relatives such as Jamjars, a drill sergeant with a military flair. Bottles’ molehills are scattered throughout locations in Banjo-Kazooie, offering lessons in moves like the Flap Flip for reaching high platforms, Talon Trot for traversing slopes, Wonderwing for temporary invincibility and Beak Bomb for aerial attacks. Initial abilities include walking, jumping, swimming and crouching, with advanced techniques unlocked by interacting with Bottles at specific locations. In the sequel, Jamjars takes over as the instructor, requiring the collection of Musical Notes before teaching new moves. His hatches are found in every world, and each lesson is delivered in a military cadence. Notable abilities introduced include first-person aiming known as Breegull Blaster, new egg types, and the ability to split Banjo and Kazooie, allowing each character to use unique techniques such as Glide, Sack Pack and Taxi Pack. All moves from the original game remain available, ensuring continuity in gameplay. Banjo-Kazooie Grunty’s Revenge continues the tradition, with abilities like Pack Whack, Egg Firing, and Talon Trot, while maintaining the need to interact with teaching characters for progression. Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts shifts the focus to vehicle-based gameplay. Lord of Games, creator of all games, provides Banjo and Kazooie with basic techniques, including climbing, swimming, jumping and attacking using Kazooie’s powerful Magic Wrench. Many classic techniques are removed or integrated into vehicle parts, including Kazooie’s Egg Firing ability. After the final confrontation with Gruntilda, the Lord of Games restores classic moves, including the Flight Pad ability, in recognition of Kazooie’s request.

» Yooka-Laylee Series

The Yooka-Laylee games offer a progression system where techniques are taught by Trowzer, a snake entrepreneur running Trowzers Worldwide Incredible Traders Co. Ltd. Techniques are purchased using Quills, the main collectible currency. Trowzer provides different moves in each location and offers free abilities in Hivory Towers, which help unlock new Grand Tomes and expand his business. The power meter, replenished by collecting butterflies and expanded by collecting Power Extenders, regulates the use of most abilities. As progression continues, new abilities unlock access to previously unreachable sections, facilitate the completion of challenges, and enhance collectible gathering. In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Trowzer presents paywalls throughout the Royal Stingdom hub world, requiring T.W.I.T. Coins for passage. Basic techniques such as walking, jumping, swimming, and attacking are sufficient for completing the game, while skilled players can discover creative ways to bypass paywalls. Yooka-Replayee introduces a refined ability system, enhancing both classic and new moves for smoother gameplay and greater versatility. It features a new control scheme, allowing abilities to be swiftly chained together for a quicker, more fluid experience. Core techniques such as the Reptile Roll, Sonar Shot, Slurp State and Buddy Slam have been reworked for improved, while new abilities expand the move set.
