Grunty’s Furnace Fun is a perilous game show, hosted by the wicked witch Gruntilda and serves as the final challenge that players must overcome to rescue Tooty. The quiz show requires them to answer a series of questions posed by Gruntilda Winkybunion correctly in order to advance to the next square. Incorrect responses result in the loss of a Honeycomb and the player’s inability to proceed, while an incorrect answer on a Skull Square, on the other hand, results in an instant plunge into the fiery pit of hot lava, forcing them to start the quiz all over again. However, a clever trick involving Skull Squares enables Banjo and Kazooie to skip the second half of the board and bypass Grunty’s Furnace Fun. The trick entails deliberately failing one of her questions, while on a Skull Square, but rather than being ejected into the lava and meeting a fiery demise, the player is returned to the board unscathed, allowing them to traverse every subsequent square without responding to any questions. Moreover, there are two methods to accomplish this trick. The first method requires Banjo and Kazooie to stand on one of the three Skull Squares, lining up Banjo’s right foot with the skull icon’s left eye, and then enter the first-person mode to align the bottom of Kazooie’s beak with the intersecting corners of the preceding squares. Once done, players must intentionally answer the question of Grunty incorrectly, which will launch them off the square but not into the hot lava if the trick was executed correctly. Following this, they can move freely over every square on the board without any consequence. The alternative method involves standing on the Skull Square adjacent to a Musical Note Square and a Gruntilda Square located near the far left of the Furnace Fun board, facing the direction of the top-right corner, and pressing the A button to answer one of Gruntilda Winkybunion’s questions. If the set-up was done correctly, the trick should work as intended, allowing the player to skip Furnace Fun entirely. Furthermore, four extra lives are scattered throughout the board. Upon completing Grunty’s Furnace Fun, Banjo and Kazooie can easily collect them to aid them in the final battle.
