Red Feathers are a collectible in the Banjo-Kazooie series, serving multiple functions throughout the games. These feathers can be found in almost every level and are plentiful, so running out is usually not a major problem. Red Feathers are primarily used to help Kazooie gain and maintain altitude while flying. Bottles teaches Banjo and Kazooie how to fly on top of The Salty Hippo in Treasure Trove Cove. To take off, players need to use Flight Pads, which are blue discs with a picture of Red Feathers on them. These pads can be found in Treasure Trove Cove, Freezeezy Peak, Gobi’s Valley, Mad Monster Mansion, Rusty Bucket Bay, and Click Clock Wood. Taking off from a Flight Pad doesn’t require any feathers, but once airborne, players can press the A button to flap higher at the expense of a red feather for each button press. Players need to manage their Red Feather supply in later levels like Click Clock Wood, where extended flight sections require more planning. Additionally, Red Feathers are used to execute powerful maneuvers. The Beak Bomb, performed while flying, requires a single feather and allows Kazooie to dive-bomb enemies and objects. The Talon Torpedo, used while swimming underwater with Banjo, needs five red feathers and propels the duo forward at high speed. Drill Sergeant Jamjars teaches Banjo and Kazooie the Talon Torpedo ability in Banjo-Tooie. Without any Red Feathers, Kazooie is unable to execute these abilities. In Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo and Kazooie can carry only 50 Red Feathers. Players can acquire the REDFEATHERS cheat by speaking to the second Cheato hidden in Gruntilda’s Lair, who can be found in the lava room by following a small winding path as the pumpkin. Entering this Cheato Code on the Sandcastle floor in Treasure Trove Cove increases the amount of feathers they can carry to 100. This limit carries over to Banjo-Tooie, meaning the FEATHERS cheat in that game doubles the capacity to 200. In Banjo-Tooie, Red Feathers maintain their role but become even more important due to larger, more complex worlds. The game introduces new challenges and longer distances, making the increased capacity essential. In Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, a Red Feather is seen in the box of Banjo and Kazooie’s old moves which they receive at the end of the game. This serves as a nostalgic nod to the Red Feathers’ importance throughout the series. The game takes a different approach to gameplay, replacing traditional platforming with vehicle construction, so Red Feathers no longer serve their original mechanical purpose.
