Blasto is a living cannon who appears in Yooka-Laylee, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and Yooka-Replaylee. He has a dark metal barrel with eyes mounted above it, supported by a wooden carriage with wheels and metal fittings. A small red bird with a yellow beak accompanies him, perching on the barrel and moving around him during conversations. Blasto first needs the duo's help in Shipwreck Creek because something lodged inside him prevents him from blasting properly. His problem provides an early reason to return to the starting area after learning Buddy Slam in the first Grand Tome. He later becomes unexpectedly important to the original game's ending, when a search for medical help brings him into Capital B's office. The Impossible Lair gives him a different practical role beside a raised bridge, while the remake retains his throat-clearing collectible. His brother Blastooie is a separate, larger cannon encountered on Tribalstack Monument. Their similar designs and shared method of firing through a forceful impact connect them, but each has a different location, dialogue and task.
Finding Blasto in Shipwreck Creek
In the original Yooka-Laylee, Blasto waits at the top of a dirt path against the cliffs behind Bat Ship Crazy, the wrecked ship used as Yooka and Laylee's home. From the creek, follow the uphill route to the narrow grassy ledge where the cannon faces out over the area. He explains that his blasting is being affected by an obstruction in his throat. The extra Pagies around Shipwreck Creek become available after collecting a Pagie in Tribalstack Tropics, placing this encounter among the return visits to the starting area. The nearby broken mast has another Pagie of its own, so reaching that collectible does not solve Blasto's problem. Although later cleanup routes often approach his ledge by flying, the dirt path makes Flappy Flight unnecessary for the cannon's reward. His position close to the ship and the entrance to Hivory Towers lets the player complete the visit while returning through the early hub rather than travelling into a later Grand Tome.
Clearing Blasto’s Throat
Buddy Slam is the move required to help Blasto in the original game. Trowzer sells it for 30 Quills on the upper exterior level of Duke's Temple in Tribalstack Tropics. Once it has been learned, leave the Grand Tome, cross back through the early rooms of Hivory Towers and return to Shipwreck Creek. Speak to Blasto, jump onto his barrel or back and use the downward slam. The impact makes him expel a Pagie, which rises into the air for the duo to collect. One successful slam completes the task, and the reward is included with the Pagies associated with Hivory Towers and the creek. The action uses a newly purchased ability in an earlier location, giving the encounter a small cross-area dependency despite its short final solution. Blastooie's later challenge also uses Buddy Slam to fire a cannon, but there the player must aim repeated shots at a rotating target. Blasto's blocked-throat task has no target sequence, transformation or required world expansion.
Blasto in the Original Ending
Blasto reappears after Yooka and Laylee defeat Capital B in his office. The conversation there reveals that Dr. Quack is reporting to the wider organisation V.I.L.E., leaving the duo with questions about who is behind Hivory Towers. Blasto interrupts while looking for the first-aid room, coughing and explaining that something else has become stuck in his throat. His arrival is unrelated to any plan to confront the villains. He discharges his cannon during the exchange, knocking Capital B and Dr. Quack into an open book, which closes and traps them inside. The accident brings the confrontation to an abrupt end before Laylee can obtain more information about the secret organisation. Blasto then says he feels better, while Yooka reassures him that no harm has been done and that they have recovered Laylee's book. This scene is an automatic part of the original finale: the player does not aim the cannon or perform another Buddy Slam during the conversation. The return of his throat complaint turns the earlier optional encounter into the setup for a story event with consequences far beyond its single Pagie.
The Celebration and Blasto’s Reputation
The original game's closing celebration takes place back at Shipwreck Creek, bringing together characters encountered during the adventure. Laylee is irritated when the attention shifts away from the duo's work recovering the One Book. Dr. Puzz identifies Blasto as the brave figure whose heroic acts they have gathered to celebrate, rewarding his accidental intervention with the reputation of a rescuer. The joke depends on the difference between his modest reason for entering the office and the much larger result of his discharge. The Impossible Lair later refers back to this treatment in his conversation, where he remembers receiving compliments and cake after the previous adventure. Blasto also receives a smaller reference in the original Quack-Fire Quiz: his name is attached to the invented arcade title Blasto Bowling. That title is the answer to a question asking which game Rextro's arcade does not contain. It is a false option within the quiz rather than a playable minigame or a separate adventure starring the cannon.
Blasto in the Impossible Lair
Blasto returns to Shipwreck Creek in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, standing north of Bat Ship Crazy beside a bridge that is raised out of reach. One route to this part of the overworld opens after a Pagie challenge creates a watercourse near Chapter 2. Use the nearby sluice lever to send water towards the previously dry basin, swim to the opening in its wall and follow the cave to the creek. Explore past the ship to reach Blasto. His conversation includes an option to ask him to turn around, and the duo address him by name when making the request. Choose that option, leave the conversation and use a spinning tail attack beside the rear of the cannon to ignite the fuse. His shot knocks down the bridge, creating a shortcut between the creek and the earlier part of the overworld near the Impossible Lair. The interaction uses his firing ability to alter the surrounding route instead of removing a Pagie from inside his barrel. The lowered bridge also gives access to a hidden tonic, providing a further reason to inspect the new crossing after the shot.
The Quill Magnet Tonic
Once Blasto has lowered the bridge, walk onto it and use Buddy Slam near its midpoint to reveal Quill Magnet. The tonic appears as a collectible on the crossing; it is not handed over during Blasto's dialogue. Picking it up unlocks it in the Tonics menu, where it costs 1,500 Quills to purchase before it can be equipped. Its effect draws nearby Quills towards Yooka and Laylee, helping them gather the currency scattered through the chapters, including Quills released from ghostly trails. Quill Magnet has no positive or negative adjustment to the Quill multiplier, so its value is the easier collection of currency rather than a direct increase to the amount each Quill is worth. The full sequence is therefore to turn Blasto, fire the cannon, cross the lowered bridge, reveal the bottle and then purchase the unlocked tonic. The bridge stays useful as an overworld connection even if the player leaves the tonic unequipped. This reward is separate from the original game's throat-clearing Pagie and from the other tonic bottles hidden around the shipwreck.
Blasto in Yooka-Replaylee
Yooka-Replaylee keeps Blasto on the hill behind the ship in the starting area. His collectible is named Bunged Up Buddy and is included in the Hivory Towers hub's Pagie collection. Follow the natural slope up to the cannon, speak to him and use Buddy Slam on his back to release the Pagie. The remake makes the duo's normal abilities available from the beginning, so this encounter can be completed without the original detour to buy Buddy Slam from Trowzer for 30 Quills. The essential action and the one-Pagie reward remain recognisable despite that change in progression. His introductory task should also be distinguished from his role in the original story's conclusion. The remake rewrites the finale: Capital B is defeated at the arena and ends up sinking into the surrounding toxic liquid, rather than sharing the original office scene in which Blasto knocks him and Dr. Quack into a book. Retaining Blasto's early collectible does not mean that his original closing intervention is repeated unchanged.
Blasto’s Character Reveal
Playtonic introduced Blasto ahead of the original game's release through its Character of the Day feature on 20 February 2017. The reveal paired his design with a complaint about a bad night and a visit to Dirty Dave's Dubious Donners, establishing the coughing, food-related humour associated with his throat problem. That promotional line is included among the quotations below; the named takeaway is part of the joke and is not presented as a location the player can visit. His appearance also places a small, brightly coloured bird beside a much larger partner, a visual arrangement that invites comparison with the bear-and-bird characters of Banjo-Kazooie. The companion remains an unnamed bird in Blasto's scenes, so the resemblance does not establish that it is Kazooie or another returning character. The cannon and bird are also shared visual features of Blastooie's design, allowing the brothers' relationship to be recognised without treating their individual challenges as interchangeable.
