Clara is a skeleton explorer who appears in Yooka-Laylee and returns in Yooka-Replaylee. Yooka and Laylee meet her in Tribalstack Tropics, Glitterglaze Glacier and Moodymaze Marsh, where her expeditions lead to a rescue, a dispute over her antique pot and a search for a hidden gem. She wears a pith helmet, a pink neckerchief and red fingerless gloves, with yellow trousers and brown boots visible when she is standing outside the pot. Her large eyes remain visible within her otherwise skeletal face. Potty Mouth, the talking vessel that accompanies her in the first two worlds, frequently joins the conversation and objects when Laylee dismisses him as worthless. Clara regards him as a valuable antique, even when his own remarks make the situation less dignified. Her dialogue combines an explorer's enthusiasm for treasure with complaints about the danger and discomfort of her work, including jokes about her femur and tailbone. Each of her three original-game tasks awards a Pagie, but the circumstances and abilities required differ between encounters. The later game revisits those situations with changes to how the rescue challenges work.
Clara in Tribalstack Tropics
Clara is first encountered in the Tribal Village, reached by following the raised wooden walkway near the entrance to Tribalstack Tropics. She is tied inside Potty Mouth above a fire, surrounded by the settlement's huts and tunnel entrances, and explains that the local Corplets intend to cook her. Potty Mouth points out the impracticality of making a meal from a skeleton, while Clara asks the duo to intervene before her captors return with their condiments. Accepting her request starts a combat encounter in the village. Fifteen Corplets must be defeated before the rescue is complete; the player can use the duo's ordinary attacks rather than waiting for a transformation or an ability learned in a later world. The enemies enter the enclosed area as the battle progresses, and their comments extend the cooking joke to Yooka and Laylee when the pair fight back. Once the attackers have been cleared, speak to Clara again to receive her Pagie. Refusing the initial request leaves the rescue available for later, with Clara complaining of cramp and then a loss of feeling when the duo return; Potty Mouth also protests about having to listen to her. After being saved, she thanks the pair and warns that the enemies may return. Her later conversation changes according to whether the world has been expanded: before expansion, she draws attention to the passage beyond the village and suggests coming back for another expedition. Expanding the Grand Tome opens the route toward Shovel Knight's temple, whose gem-retrieval challenge is a separate objective rather than another reward from Clara.
Clara in Glitterglaze Glacier
In Glitterglaze Glacier, Clara stands outside Potty Mouth on a small ramp by the igloos on the upper cliffs. This time she describes the pot as the valuable artifact being held by the nearby tribe, and asks Yooka and Laylee to destroy its homes before her antique can be taken away. The encounter can be completed in the world's original, unexpanded state. One approach to the cliffs is through the Frozen Path near the entrance side of the world. Learn Slurp Shot from Trowzer in Tribalstack Tropics for 30 Quills and Slurp State from him in Glitterglaze Glacier for 40 Quills, then absorb the heat from the fire pit at the beginning of that route. The fire state protects the pair from the severe cold as they move between the pits. Light the four unlit pits along the path, refreshing the state at the newly lit fires as necessary; with all five burning, the route becomes warm and opens onto the area leading to the cliffs. At the village, Clara's task requires Buddy Slam, which Trowzer sells in Tribalstack Tropics for 30 Quills. Jump onto each of the five igloos and slam its roof to demolish it, watching for hostile occupants released from the buildings. Destroying a single roof does not finish the original game's five-building objective. The Snowplough transformation can also smash the igloos with its charge, but obtaining that form is an alternative rather than a requirement for the normal Buddy Slam route. Return to Clara once the homes have been destroyed to receive the Pagie. She expresses relief about saving her pot, and Yooka and Laylee respond with jokes about rebuilding the igloos and her skeleton. Her concern here is Potty Mouth's safety, in contrast to her own captivity in the first world.
Clara in Moodymaze Marsh
Clara's third Yooka-Laylee encounter is beside a large pipe near the lake in Moodymaze Marsh. This part of the world becomes accessible after expanding its Grand Tome in Hivory Towers for eight Pagies. She asks the duo to retrieve a gem from the underground chamber reached through the pipe, an area known as the Foggy Pit. Before attempting the search, learn Sonar 'Splosion from Trowzer in Moodymaze Marsh for 60 Quills. Ordinary movement can reach the entrance, but the sonic burst is needed to make progress through the obscured, blocked passages inside. Enter the pipe beside Clara and use the move to disperse the surrounding mist and break the thick glass blocks whose outlines can be seen through it. Further bursts open a route into the narrower chamber containing the gem and deal with the Googly Eyes encountered there. Watch the overhead thorns while crossing between clear sections; removing the glass does not remove those hazards. Collect the gem, retrace the route to the entrance pipe and return to Clara outside. Handing over the recovered treasure earns another Pagie. The reward depends on bringing the gem back rather than merely finding its chamber or destroying the obstacles. Unlike the earlier encounters, the objective does not involve defending Potty Mouth or breaking a set of buildings, and no separate transformation is required to carry out the search.
Clara in Yooka-Replaylee
Clara returns in the same three Grand Tomes in Yooka-Replaylee, with revisions that matter when following the original game's instructions. In Tribalstack Tropics, speak to Clara and Potty Mouth in the village arena and accept their request. The encounter first has the duo knock down wooden enemy cutouts before fighting Capital B's actual minions; finishing it awards a Pagie and opens the onward path to Shovel Knight. There is also a separate collectible in the arena: absorb the Fire Plant and light the brazier beside the rightmost cave entrance to reveal a Pagie Puzzle Piece. That piece is an environmental reward in addition to Clara's rescue Pagie, and the later temple gem requested by Shovel Knight belongs to his own challenge. The glacier encounter reverses the original situation. Potty Mouth is standing among the igloos and tells Yooka and Laylee that Clara is trapped inside one of them. Buddy Slam the roofs until her hiding place is revealed and the explorer can be reunited with the pot; doing so earns the Pagie. Destroying all five igloos to save Potty Mouth is the 2017 game's objective, while finding Clara is the revised one. In Moodymaze Marsh, cross the rotating wooden platforms to the island where she waits beside a large pipe. Her request still leads into the mist-filled cave: use Sonar 'Splosion to clear the view, recover the gem and bring it back to her for a Pagie. Replaylee begins with the duo's moves unlocked and the worlds already expanded, so the earlier game's move purchases and eight-Pagie marsh-expansion payment are not prerequisites for these versions of her tasks. The familiar locations therefore do not imply identical quest steps across the two games.
Additional Information
Dr. Quack's quizzes provide two further references to Clara in the original Yooka-Laylee. Although she does not introduce herself by name in her conversations, the first quiz can identify her from a character picture, while the second asks what she needs the duo to save in Glitterglaze Glacier; the answer is her pot. This reflects the released glacier encounter rather than the later Replaylee version in which Clara herself is hidden inside an igloo. The village battle uses a faster variation of the Tribalstack Tropics theme that is also heard during Nimble's races. Earlier material also shows changes to her presentation. Concept artwork depicts her with a long braid, while the later character wears the explorer's helmet; a contemporary account of the playable EGX 2016 demonstration already describes the hat, cauldron and battle against waves of Corplets. Prerelease glacier images place her inside Potty Mouth, unlike her standing position outside him in the original game's finished version. These differences concern her design and the staging of the encounters. The games do not explain how she became a skeleton or establish a former identity, and the resemblance of her explorer outfit to other adventure characters does not by itself confirm a name origin.
