Dolly the Trolley is a talking shopping cart introduced in Yooka-Laylee, where he needs rescuing from the underwater passages of Moodymaze Marsh. He has a dull grey metal basket, a purple handle supporting his eyes, an orange traffic cone and fish skeletons hanging from his frame. These discarded objects suit his work collecting rubbish and distinguish him from the other trolleys scattered around the marsh. His name rhymes with trolley, the British term for a shopping cart, following the naming pattern shared by Ollie, Jolly and Wally. Dolly's original encounter takes place in Dusky Duct, a submerged industrial tunnel reached using Dr. Puzz's Piranha transformation. His reward is a Pagie, but the conversation after freeing him reveals that removing his immediate obstruction does not mean he can simply wheel back to dry land. He later appears at the entrance to the beach area in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. The remake, Yooka-Replaylee, retains an underwater trolley rescue while explicitly identifying its captive as Ollie, creating a distinction between the versions that is easy to miss when following a walkthrough.
Dolly in Moodymaze Marsh
Dolly is found near the end of Dusky Duct in the original game's third Grand Tome. His rubbish-collecting work has left him trapped beneath a pile of bones, out of reach of the trolley characters who stand on the marsh's outdoor paths. When approached, he calls for help and suggests finding a St. Bernard capable of holding its breath for a long time. The reference to a rescue dog is part of his distress dialogue; the actual solution uses the fish form available within this world. His traffic cone and skeletal debris remain recognisable even in the tunnel's green underwater lighting. Reaching him requires following the lagoon's transformation route and clearing the duct's own obstacles. The encounter is available without expanding Moodymaze Marsh, so players can complete it during their initial visit once the necessary local preparations have been made. The Pagie he offers is connected to his collection of discarded material, giving the reward a place in his predicament rather than presenting him as an unrelated challenge attendant.
Preparing the Underwater Rescue
The route begins at Moodymaze Lagoon, where Jolly's broken filtering equipment has made the central water hazardous. Yooka and Laylee must complete his purification task before exploring this pool normally. Lizard Lash, sold by Trowzer in Moodymaze Marsh for 60 Quills, pulls a crate onto the switch inside the fenced pipe beside Jolly. The resulting platforms lead to a central switch, which starts a 25-second circuit of four outer switches. Completing the circuit clears the lagoon and opens Jolly's own Pagie reward. The newly usable water also contains the Mollycool needed for Dolly's rescue. It is inside a submerged cylindrical enclosure: destroy the mushrooms on its upper covering to open access, then swim in and collect it. Dr. Puzz stands on a ledge across the lagoon with her D.N.Ray. Giving her this world's Mollycool enables the Piranha transformation, also described as a shoal of fish. The form can remain underwater, pass through the thorn-covered approach and bite the bone piles inside the duct. The nearby Pagie enclosed by thorns is a separate collectible and can be obtained during the same transformation.
Finding a Way through Dusky Duct
The entrance is a small submerged pipe screened by thorns near the larger passage leading into Murky Passage. Enter it as the Piranha shoal to reach Dusky Duct. At the beginning, a closed gate prevents direct progress and two side passages contain fans that blow intermittently. A pile of bones weighs down a switch beneath each fan. Wait for a vent to stop blowing, move into its passage and use the fish attack to break the bones; repeat this on the other side so both switches rise and the gate opens. The route beyond combines currents with glowing blue electrical obstacles. Careful swimming is needed through the narrow tunnel and down the circular shaft, where several rotating electrical elements cross the descent. Jellyfish occupy the lower rooms and can be attacked in fish form. Continue through these rooms, past the electrical hazards and into the shaft marked by a green light, then swim upward to the final chamber. Dolly is waiting there under another bone pile. A nearby exit pipe returns to the lagoon once the encounter is finished, allowing the player to leave without retracing the full obstacle course.
Freeing Dolly and Returning to the Surface
Attack the bones covering Dolly with the Piranha shoal to remove the obstruction. The game releases one Pagie as the reward for helping him, completing the duct's rescue objective. Speaking again produces a further exchange about whether he will come back ashore. Dolly expects to spend the rest of his days in the duct and suggests that the duo might carry him out; he then resigns himself to being left behind, saying that he would only slow them down. His final request is that they tell others about the remarkable rubbish-collecting trolley they met. The joke gives him an exaggerated farewell even though the immediate puzzle has already been solved. There is no escort sequence in which the player steers Dolly through the duct or transports his cart to Dr. Puzz. The duo can take the exit pipe and return to the lagoon in fish form. Jolly's purification Pagie, the thorn-enclosed Pagie outside and the reward at the end of Murky Passage belong to their own tasks, so collecting Dolly's reward does not complete all of the lagoon's underwater objectives.
Dolly in the Impossible Lair
Dolly returns in the beach portion of the Royal Stingdom in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. This region lies beyond the fifth and final Paywall, which requires 25 T.W.I.T. Coins to open. He stands near the northern entrance, making him one of the first characters encountered after passing into the beach. Ollie occupies another position farther south beside the sandcastle containing Chapter 15, while Jolly and Wally have separate interactions around the bay and lighthouse. Dolly's later appearance uses the bag-carrying look associated with Ollie in the original game; the trolley identified as Ollie uses the cone-and-fish-skeleton design associated with Dolly. This visible exchange of appearances is a difference between the games, with no established in-story explanation. Dolly's beach appearance does not repeat his original bone-clearing rescue. The nearby sandcastle, pier-opening Pagie challenge, shark rescue and lighthouse puzzle each have their own character or object involved, so his position at the area's entrance should not be mistaken for the source of those rewards.
The Dusky Duct Trolley in Yooka-Replaylee
Yooka-Replaylee revisits the underwater rescue, but its dialogue names the captive Ollie the Trolley. He uses the cone-and-fish-skeleton appearance familiar from original Dolly, making the displayed name particularly useful for identifying which version of the encounter is being shown. The remake still sends the Piranha shoal into Dusky Duct, where attacks remove bones and vegetation holding down switches before the player reaches the stranded cart. Its presentation uses a side-on route through the industrial interior, with electrical hazards and water currents along the way. At the end, the trolley is caught in vegetation and freeing him yields a Pagie. The shared setting, appearance and rescue idea connect this scene to Dolly's original role, while the named speaker establishes the change to Ollie. The original lagoon-cleaning prerequisite also differs: the remake's water is already usable, and its Mollycool is reached by breaking the crate chained over the submerged enclosure.
