Duke is a Corplet who hosts a shooting challenge inside the central temple of Tribalstack Tropics in Yooka-Laylee and Yooka-Replaylee. His blue body, yellow belly, large mouth and orange forehead spikes resemble the other Corplets, but his clothes and behaviour set him apart from the hostile creatures roaming the world. He wears an exceptionally tall black top hat with a pale band and carries a cane, presenting himself as a gentleman of superior social standing. The original hat has a damaged top, while his updated appearance in the remake includes a monocle. Duke addresses Yooka and Laylee as visiting sportsmen before repeatedly reminding them of their supposedly inferior status. His interest in hunting supplies the theme for the wooden targets in his gallery, which depict the Corplets he considers beneath him. In the original game, helping him involves opening the temple's blocked windows and then completing the target challenge for a Pagie. The remake retains him as the host of Duke It Out!, changing the entrance and the shooting task while preserving his exaggerated manners and the contrast between his appearance and his opinion of himself.
Duke in Tribalstack Tropics
Duke occupies the ground-floor chamber of Duke's Temple, the central building reached across the bridge from Tribalstack Tropics' opening area. Trowzer sets up his move-selling business on the exterior level above, with Vendi also nearby. The gallery is available during the world's initial form, so expanding the Grand Tome is unnecessary for Duke's Pagie. On first meeting him, Yooka is surprised that a creature resembling the other Corplets can speak so elaborately instead of charging at the duo. Duke rejects the comparison and declares himself the game's most aristocratic character. Laylee counters by mentioning someone with an enormous ice palace in the next world, treating the size of that property as a better measure of wealth. The exchange refers ahead to Glitterglaze Glacier without establishing who owns its palace. Duke then explains that his gallery is too dark because someone has blocked the windows above. If the player has already cleared the obstruction before speaking to him, the conversation acknowledges the completed work and moves on to arranging the contest.
Opening the Temple Windows
The original window puzzle uses four square panels on the upper exterior level of Duke's Temple. Leave his chamber and follow the temple's ramps upward to the level where Trowzer sells moves. Buddy Slam breaks the red-and-white panels, letting daylight into the room below. This move costs 30 Quills from Trowzer in Tribalstack Tropics. Destroy all four panels, moving around the temple to check each position rather than stopping after the first beam of light appears. Duke calls up as the work progresses and invites the duo back inside once every window is clear. The change can also be seen in the brighter gallery when they return. It prepares his sporting challenge rather than giving the Pagie immediately: Duke still expects them to demonstrate their shooting. Slurp Shot, another move sold here for 30 Quills, is required for that next part. Buying both moves therefore costs 60 Quills in the original game, and obtaining them before returning downstairs avoids another trip when Duke asks about the duo's qualifications.
The Original Shooting Gallery
After the room has been lit, speak to Duke again and accept his offer. The firing position is a target-marked tile in the centre of the chamber, flanked by two plants that supply ice berries. Slurp Shot lets Yooka take in the berries and fire them as projectiles at the wooden Corplet cutouts appearing across the gallery. Enter the aiming view, watch for each target and shoot the boards as they become exposed. The berry power lasts for a limited period, so refresh it from the plants instead of continuing to aim after the ammunition effect has expired. Duke provides encouragement as the targets are hit and congratulates the duo when the challenge is complete, although his praise still includes a remark about their lowly status. The nearby Cagie then opens and the player can collect one Pagie. The central firing tile, berry plants and target boards all belong to this shooting task; the room's earlier window puzzle is its preparation. Speaking to Duke after finishing produces a dismissal rather than another scored round or an additional Pagie.
Duke’s Manners and Other References
Duke's conversation repeatedly turns ordinary requests into expressions of social rank. He calls other Corplets uncivilised, offers the duo work he considers appropriate to their station and objects when Laylee expects him to hand over his valuable sheet of paper without a contest. His concern over the Pagie includes the prospect of having to use local plants when he needs the toilet. Refusing his challenge reveals another reason for his secluded home: he says he is trying to avoid paying tax. If the player agrees to compete without knowing Slurp Shot, Duke directs them to Trowzer rather than starting a challenge they cannot perform. After their success, he announces plans to mock the commoners outside. These remarks establish his self-importance without confirming a noble family or any official authority over the world. Duke also appears indirectly in the original game's first Quack-Fire Quiz, where Dr. Quack asks which character lives inside the Tribalstack temple. The correct answer identifies Duke, connecting the early gallery encounter with the quiz encountered on the way to the next world.
Duke in Yooka-Replaylee
Duke returns inside the same central temple in Yooka-Replaylee, but the approach begins at a door marked with a snowflake. Break the nearby crate to reveal an ice plant, absorb its power and shoot ice at the door to open it. The interior is already lit when entered, so the original four-panel window task is no longer the required setup. Speak to Duke and enter the blue challenge hoop to begin Duke It Out! The revised gallery asks the player to shoot six Corplet targets within 30 seconds. The boards occupy different positions around the room, and rotating stone pillars can interrupt the line of sight, making it useful to turn towards the next visible target instead of firing continually into an obstruction. The two ice plants allow the duo to replenish their power during the attempt, a point Duke specifically mentions. Clearing the targets opens the nearby Cagie and awards one Pagie. The duo's normal abilities are available from the beginning of the remake, so this version does not require buying Buddy Slam and Slurp Shot for the original 60-Quill total. The ice-marked entrance and new target arrangement are the relevant preparations instead.
