Jolly the Trolley

Jolly the Trolley banner placeholder

Jolly the Trolley is a talking shopping cart who appears in Yooka-Laylee, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and Yooka-Replaylee. In the original adventure he looks after the water in Moodymaze Lagoon, where broken filtering machinery has left the central pool polluted. His request to restart the equipment earns a Pagie and opens an important part of Moodymaze Marsh to underwater exploration. He later needs rescuing from sharks in the Royal Stingdom, while the remake gives him a revised task beside the marsh's lake. Jolly has a metal basket supported by a wheeled frame, with large eyes attached to his purple handle. Two yellow life rings distinguish him from the other trolley characters: one sits inside the basket and another hangs around the side of the handle. His frame is cleaner and less battered than those of his fellow carts. The word trolley is the British term for a shopping cart, and his name follows the same rhyming pattern as Ollie, Dolly and Wally. These are separate characters with their own tasks, even when several of them occupy the same world. Jolly's conversations combine a practical need for help with cheerful remarks about the holiday he took while his machinery was left unattended.

Jolly in Yooka-Laylee

Jolly is found beside the fenced opening of a large pipe in Moodymaze Lagoon, reached after crossing the floating-log section of Moodymaze Marsh. The marsh is the third Grand Tome world, and his task is available before its expansion. He introduces himself as the cart responsible for keeping the water clean, but admits that the machinery stopped working while he was spending a weekend in Capital Cashino. His fond recollection of the trip does little to solve the polluted water in front of him. The equipment's switches are positioned above the lagoon, beyond the reach of the ageing wheels he complains about, so he asks Yooka and Laylee to operate them for him. The main prerequisite is Lizard Lash, which Trowzer teaches in Moodymaze Marsh for 60 Quills. It allows Yooka to pull objects fitted with the appropriate attachment and grapple to marked points. Buddy Slam is also needed to operate the raised switches; Trowzer sells that move in Tribalstack Tropics for 30 Quills. Glide, taught free in Hivory Towers, helps the duo move between the elevated platforms. Jolly does not teach these abilities himself. Once his request has been accepted, the first obstacle is the crate inside the pipe beside him. Its position behind the fence makes the pulling function of Lizard Lash essential to starting the machinery's switch challenge.

Restarting the Water Filters

Stand outside the pipe's fence and use Lizard Lash on the crate's attachment point, then move backwards to pull the crate onto the floor switch. This activates the platforms leading out over the polluted pool. Cross the wooden stepping platforms and use the grapple point to reach the central hanging platform. Buddy Slam the plate in its middle to begin the timed part of the repair. Four additional switches appear on platforms around the surrounding trees, and all four must be pressed within 25 seconds. Use the grapple points to reach each platform, land and Buddy Slam its switch, then continue toward the next one. The switches belong to one timed circuit, so reaching a single outer platform is only part of the job. Moving directly between adjacent platforms with a jump and glide saves time compared with returning to the centre after every press. The bees around the course can interrupt a landing or attack, but stopping to clear them all also uses the timer. Keep the next grapple point in view and move on as soon as the current switch has been activated. If the attempt runs out of time, restart the circuit and repeat the sequence. Completing all four outer switches restores the filtering equipment, cleans the central water and opens the Cagie beside Jolly. Collect the Pagie there to finish his original task.

Exploring the Restored Lagoon

The repair changes what the duo can do in this part of Moodymaze Marsh as well as supplying Jolly's immediate reward. The central pool can now be entered and explored safely, exposing routes that the polluted water had obstructed. Dr. Puzz and her D.N.Ray stand on a ledge across the lagoon from Jolly, with Rextro's arcade on higher ground nearby. The world's Mollycool is inside a submerged container in this pool. Recovering it and returning it to Dr. Puzz unlocks the Piranha transformation, whose biting attack clears underwater thorns and other obstructions. The pipe entrances beneath the surface also lead to distinct challenges, including Murky Passage and Swampy Station. Buddy Bubble lets the duo walk along the bottom and operate underwater switches; Trowzer provides this ability free in Hivory Towers before the marsh. Those passages have their own obstacles and rewards, and rescuing Dolly farther into the underwater routes is a separate trolley task. Jolly's purification therefore provides access to further exploration without automatically completing the activities found there. The relevant change is to the central lagoon around the filtering equipment; hazardous swamp water elsewhere should still be approached according to the route being explored.

Reaching Jolly in the Impossible Lair

In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Jolly appears in the Beach area of the Royal Stingdom's overworld. The normal route reaches this district after the fifth and final Paywall, for which Trowzer demands 25 T.W.I.T. Coins. Jolly is stranded on a small rock west of the wooden pier, with two sharks circling him. Getting into position to help involves restoring the pier first. South of the Chapter 16 book, Queasy Quay, several moving lumps travel beneath the sand. Buddy Slam them to uncover their contents; one releases a Pagie, while the others contain Quills. The freed Pagie waits at the end of the broken dock and offers a challenge. Inside its single-screen room, use an explosive to break open the cage containing the spiked enemy. Defeat that enemy with another explosive, or lead it down to the gap beneath the collapsible platform. Completing the challenge brings the Pagies out into the overworld to raise the sunken pier. The repaired walkway provides the position needed for the rescue. Follow it south and take the left branch at its first junction to find a pile of stones opposite Jolly's rock. The branch toward the lighthouse and Chapter 17 is a different route from the turn leading to him.

The Shark Rescue and Cartoony Tonic

Use Yooka's tongue to pick up a stone from the pile on the pier, aim toward one of the circling sharks and throw the stone at it. A single hit sends that shark away. Pick up another stone and repeat against the second shark so that both threats have left Jolly's rock. The player does not need a transformation or the original game's purchased Lizard Lash move for this rescue. Despite the life rings attached to his basket, Jolly waits for help while the sharks are present, then swims to the beach once the water is safe. He leaves the Cartoony tonic behind on the rock, so move out to collect it after dealing with the sharks. Finding the bottle unlocks the tonic in the menu; activating it still costs 250 Quills. Cartoony gives Yooka and Laylee a cel-shaded appearance resembling a television cartoon, with no bonus or penalty to the Quill multiplier. After the rescue, Jolly can be found on the beach near Ollie and the Chapter 15 area, where he thanks the duo for saving him. This relocation gives the event an aftermath beyond the bottle appearing on his former perch.

Jolly in Yooka-Replaylee

Jolly returns beside the lake in the remake's Moodymaze Marsh, near a Mark fast travel point and the familiar pipes and tree platforms. The lake can already be explored without completing the original water-purification event. His associated objective is now the Sunken Sewer Pagie, a short timed retrieval from a pipe at the water's edge. Speak to him for the task, then activate the nearby pressure plate on the shore. The switch opens access to the Pagie, but the duo have only eight seconds to reach it. Run and glide across toward the open pipe and get inside before the time expires to collect the reward. The important preparation is identifying the pipe and lining up the crossing before stepping on the switch. This encounter awards one Pagie and does not repeat the original circuit of four tree-platform switches. The remake also makes the duo's normal movement abilities available from the beginning, so the original 60-Quill purchase is not a prerequisite here. The route is beside the lake's familiar pipework, below the tree branches carrying a separate lantern Pagie. Dr. Puzz remains across the water, and the nearby submerged passage has its own sidescrolling course and reward.
