Pumpkin

Pumpkins, also known as the Pumpkin Bros., are talking jack-o'-lantern characters in the Yooka-Laylee series. Two are encountered in Moodymaze Marsh in the original Yooka-Laylee, where one explains a sound-sensitive trap and the other offers a timed obstacle course. A later Pumpkin occupies a wooden tree fort in the forest of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and the first marsh encounter returns in Yooka-Replaylee. Their bodies are rounded, orange and deeply ridged, with a short stalk, oversized eyes and a jagged mouth that glows yellow from within. The original game's eyes have blue surrounds and green pupils; The Impossible Lair gives the eye surrounds a darker red colouring. They have no visible arms or legs and remain in place during their conversations with the duo. The marsh residents speak in short, simplified sentences and usually address Yooka as a lizard, identifying the Pagies as pieces of paper or prizes to be won. Their advice can be useful even when their manner is abrupt. The forest resident is more openly territorial, protesting when visitors approach the fort that contains several useful routes and collectibles.

Pumpkin in Moodymaze Marsh

The first Pumpkin stands beside a floor switch near the beginning of Moodymaze Marsh. From the entrance, pass through the underwater tunnel and clear the mushrooms on the path beyond it to reach the small pool before Trowzer's clearing. Across the water is a Pagie in a Cagie, with a narrow floating plank between the starting bank and the reward. Speaking to Pumpkin explains the mechanism: the switch raises the cage, but the sound of splashing makes it fall again. This conversation supplies a hint rather than starting a separate mission, so the puzzle can be solved without speaking to the character first. Use Buddy Slam on the switch to release the Pagie. Trowzer teaches that move in Tribalstack Tropics for 30 Quills if it has not already been learned. The crossing must then be made without touching the water. One route uses a carefully placed jump onto the middle of the plank followed immediately by another jump to the far bank; lingering or landing with Yooka's feet in the water closes the cage. A more forgiving route is to climb onto the enclosing stone wall on the right, travel along its top and drop down beside the Pagie. Lizard Leap, taught in Glitterglaze Glacier for 40 Quills, together with the duo's glide provides the height needed for that approach. It is an alternative to the plank crossing, rather than a requirement for every solution. If the trap closes, return to the switch and activate it again before another attempt. Collect the released Pagie to finish the puzzle. This encounter is available in the unexpanded world, and its quiet-water condition is independent of the larger swamp-cleaning tasks elsewhere in the marsh.

Pumpkin's Lizard Lash Challenge

A second Pumpkin is found after expanding Moodymaze Marsh's Grand Tome in Hivory Towers for eight Pagies. Follow the route around the large lake toward the part of the world where Clara waits beside her pipe, looking for a raised wooden platform with a Pumpkin and another open pipe beside it. This resident offers a challenge that requires Lizard Lash, the tongue-grappling move Trowzer sells in Moodymaze Marsh for 60 Quills. Speak to Pumpkin and accept the request to begin a 45-second trial. Red-and-white hoops appear along a course of raised platforms and pipes, and every hoop must be passed before time expires. Use the attachment points to cross the gaps, pull the lashable crate out of the way and wait briefly when a rotating platform's grapple point is facing away. Flying enemies and flame jets interrupt the route, so it is useful to watch an obstacle's cycle before committing to the next pull. Falling into the swamp costs the attempt and requires returning to the start. Pumpkin explicitly warns that reaching the end without all the hoops will not earn the prize; merely travelling to the final platform is insufficient. A successful run opens the Cagie at the finish, allowing the player to collect one Pagie. The nearby pipe returns the duo to the starting Pumpkin after the course. His conversation also slips in a reminder about leaving the power on while the save icon is visible, treating a familiar game instruction as part of his advice to the lizard. The Power Extender high on the nearby pipes is a separate collectible, not the trial's reward. There is also a distinct fiery-platform puzzle in this part of the marsh, completed by reaching and slamming its own switch; it should not be confused with Pumpkin's hoop challenge.

Pumpkin in The Impossible Lair

In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, a Pumpkin lives in the wooden tree fort near Chapter 7, Production Path, in the forest section of the Royal Stingdom. Reach this region by paying ten T.W.I.T. Coins at Trowzer's second paywall, then explore beyond the Chapter 6 area. The forest initially contains obstructing thorns and poisonous mist. Completing the nearby Pagie challenge clears the mist, while Scorchberries burn the thorn growth blocking the onward routes. Take a Scorchberry through the opened path toward the wooden structure to reach the resident Pumpkin, who shouts at the duo for entering the property. Despite the complaints and the building's No Yooka sign, the fort can be explored. Push down the bridge beside the Pumpkin to reach the book containing Production Path, and use the surrounding paths to find the routes that connect this area with the forest's later clearings. The resident's role here is tied to the fort and its hidden items, rather than to another marsh-style hoop race. The Pumpkin also appeared in promotional material before the game's release. Playtonic's teaser of 15 August 2019 used the character while narrowing the release window to October; the exact date of 8 October was announced later. That promotional appearance preceded a fully explorable forest encounter in the released game, including access to the house, the honeycomb tree and the nearby chapter books.

Pumpkin's Tree Fort

The upper part of the fort can be approached from the wooded clearing beyond the fan-filled area near Chapter 8, Windmill Way. Take the lower-left exit from that clearing to return above the Production Path book, knock down the platform to make a shortcut and enter the house on the right. Inside, the Upside Down Tonic rests on a shelf. Roll into the wall directly below it to knock the bottle down and collect it, then purchase it with Quills through the Tonics menu before equipping it. Finding the bottle makes it available to buy; Pumpkin does not sell it or exchange it for a completed race. A sign inside the house supplies a clue for the Super Sonar Tonic in the nearby enclosed forest clearing. In that clearing, defeat the small enemies and Buddy Slam the ground immediately in front of the locked Tonic cage to uncover its yellow key, then use the key to open the cage. The fort also provides an item needed by another character. Leave the house through its western exit to reach the ledge with Pumpkin's tree and a hanging honeycomb. Buddy Slam the tree to dislodge the honeycomb, drop down and collect it from the ground below. Carry it back to the talking cauldron near the Sawblade Evade book, after freeing that character from the surrounding thorns with a Scorchberry. The honeycomb sweetens the cauldron's contents, which overflow onto the book and unlock Chapter 6's Stuck version. The altered chapter can then be entered for its own level and Beettalion rescue. Taking the honeycomb from the tree does not itself complete the chapter or award its soldier. These connected routes make Pumpkin's apparently unwelcoming home useful both for Tonic hunting and for opening another level state.

Pumpkin in Yooka-Replaylee

Yooka-Replaylee brings Pumpkin back to the first water puzzle in Moodymaze Marsh. Pass through the starting tunnel and look for the jack-o'-lantern beside the button, with the trapped Pagie across the murky pool. Activating the button releases the reward, and the crossing still has to be made without touching the water. The familiar Pumpkin therefore continues to mark the sound-sensitive puzzle, even though the surrounding world contains new collectibles and revised routes. The later Lizard Lash course has also been reworked. Follow the path beyond the fast travel point near Clara's part of the lake to find the tongue-grappling challenge, now started by a floor button. Reaching its end frees one of two Pagies in Cagies, while completing the same route quickly enough frees the second. Both rewards belong to the revised course; the original game awards a single Pagie for Pumpkin's 45-second hoop trial. The remake's button activation should be used when following this route, without assuming that the original conversation still starts the event. Replaylee supplies the duo's moves from the beginning and presents the Grand Tomes in their expanded forms, so the original purchases of Buddy Slam, Lizard Leap and Lizard Lash, and the eight-Pagie marsh expansion, are not additional prerequisites here. The first Pumpkin encounter and the later course can consequently be approached with the full move set already available.
