Wally the Trolley

Wally the Trolley banner placeholder

Wally the Trolley is a talking shopping cart who appears in Yooka-Laylee, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and Yooka-Replaylee. His first role is as a mushroom grower in Moodymaze Marsh, where he offers a Pagie for clearing a competing patch. In the later platforming adventure, he waits at the top of a lighthouse and becomes part of the mechanism that unlocks an altered version of Chapter 17. Wally has a battered metal basket, patches of moss and rust, pink wheels and a chain hanging across his frame. A bag and a purple cap bearing the Playtonic emblem distinguish him from the other carts, whose eyes are similarly mounted on their handles. He speaks with an assertive, streetwise manner and treats his mushroom-growing business as something the duo should keep quiet about. His rhyming name follows the pattern of Ollie, Dolly and Jolly, using the British word for a shopping cart. Wally's original voice is credited to Pedro Paulo Martins, a guest performer associated with the game's backer voice contributions; Martins is also credited as Wally in The Impossible Lair.

Wally in Moodymaze Marsh

Wally stands beside the Mushroom Patch in the opening part of Moodymaze Marsh. Vendi is nearby on the raised ground, with Trowzer's location beneath a large mushroom below and the wooden walkways connecting this area to Ollie's maze. This makes Wally accessible before the Grand Tome is expanded. He introduces himself to Yooka and asks whether the mushroom patch belongs to the duo. Once they explain that they are passing through, he claims the area as his territory and discusses the mushrooms he grows. Laylee's enthusiasm for farmers' markets prompts him to ask for help removing another patch. He offers a golden reward, keeping the conversation in the language of his business rather than simply announcing a conventional minigame. The target mushrooms grow together on the raised ledge behind Vendi. Their location close to both the move seller and Wally allows the player to learn the relevant ability and attempt the challenge within the same small part of the world, without completing Jolly's lagoon task or using a transformation.

Clearing the Regenerating Mushrooms

Speak to Wally before attempting to clear the patch. The challenge requires every target mushroom to be destroyed at the same time, because mushrooms struck earlier grow back after a short interval. Clearing them individually while walking from one end to the other can leave the first part of the patch restored before the last mushrooms disappear. Laylee's Sonar 'Splosion provides the intended broad attack: Trowzer sells it in Moodymaze Marsh for 60 Quills. Its outward burst destroys several mushrooms around the duo at once, so moving through the patch and using successive bursts can clear the remaining targets before they regrow. The ability draws on the power meter, making available energy part of preparing an attempt. The condition is simultaneous clearance rather than collecting mushroom items or following an order of colours. Once the whole patch is down, return to Wally and speak to him for one Pagie. His closing request that the duo keep their meeting quiet continues the secretive tone of the earlier conversation. Wally's mushrooms are separate from the plants and seeds involved in Planker's gardening tasks elsewhere in the game.

Reaching the Lighthouse in the Impossible Lair

In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Wally is found above the Chapter 17 book at the beach lighthouse. The beach is opened by paying the fifth Paywall's 25 T.W.I.T. Coin fee. Access to the offshore lighthouse also depends on restoring the wooden pier: find the Pagie hidden in a moving sand mound south of Chapter 16 and complete its challenge at the broken dock. That challenge involves releasing a spiked enemy from a cage with an explosive and then defeating it, either with another explosive or by leading it into the gap beneath the collapsing platform. The Pagies raise the submerged pier when the challenge is complete. Follow the pier south and take the right-hand branch to reach the lighthouse and the book beside it. The other branch leads towards Jolly's shark rescue. The Chapter 17 book at ground level enters the ordinary Boom-Bloom Blast, while reaching Wally requires solving the route through the building above it. His placement on the balcony makes the lighthouse an overworld puzzle with a separate entrance to the chapter's altered state.

Solving the Lighthouse Circuits

Begin by going around the lighthouse to its rear doorway. The lever inside rearranges the platforms in the lower interior into a route upward, reached through the main entrance. On the second floor, glowing blue cables show where power needs to travel. Move the crate carrying a horizontal cable into the gap in the floor circuit, activating the platforms on the left so they form steps to the next doorway. On the third floor, drag the block with an X-shaped cable junction onto the left-hand connection. This powers the route that opens the previously closed gate on the floor below. Return downstairs, move the second cable block through that gate and place it in the remaining gap to complete the next connection. This supplies the right-hand circuit upstairs. Climb back to the third floor and shift the X-junction block from the left connection to the right one, carrying power onward to the exit leading to the roof. The visible blue cable is a useful guide throughout: align the block's cable with the endpoints on the floor and check which platforms or gates respond before moving to the next room. Wally waits outside at the top of this sequence.

Opening Boom-Bloom Blast - Breakthrough

Approach Wally from behind on the upper balcony and roll into the cart. The impact sends him off the ledge and into the book below, activating Boom-Bloom Blast - Breakthrough. Stand at the balcony position where he had been waiting to enter this altered version of Chapter 17. Later visits to the altered stage also use the high ledge, so reaching the normal book at ground level is not the same entrance. Wally can subsequently be seen in the background near the beginning of Breakthrough, continuing the joke that he has been knocked into the chapter itself. The stage then follows its own route of Boom-Bloom cannons and platforms. Completing it releases the Beettalion member Camerhoney from a Capital B statue. That rescue is the reward for finishing the level; pushing Wally from the balcony opens access rather than immediately awarding a Pagie or a Beettalion soldier. The normal version of Boom-Bloom Blast remains a distinct playable state beside the lighthouse.

Wally in Yooka-Replaylee

Wally returns to a plateau near the opening area of Moodymaze Marsh in Yooka-Replaylee. His task is named Toadstool Destruction, and the target patch now consists of blue, wireframe-like mushrooms rather than the solid red mushrooms of the original game. Speak to him, agree to clear the patch and use Laylee's Sonar 'Splosion across the mushrooms, then return for the Pagie. This keeps the broad-area attack at the centre of the encounter while changing the patch's visual appearance. The remake gives the duo their normal movement abilities from the beginning, so the original requirement to buy Sonar 'Splosion from Trowzer for 60 Quills does not apply here. Nearby wooden walkways, the large mushroom and the local fast-travel point help locate his plateau. His Pagie remains separate from Ollie's moving-maze reward, Jolly's timed pipe pickup and the Piranha rescue in Dusky Duct, all of which are other trolley-related encounters in the same world.
